The recent research conducted by NEMACY-Uganda revealed shocking information of poor health situation of Buwenge rural and Buwenge town council. This has led to a high number of reported cases of illnesses in health centres and high teenage pregnancies in the area resulting into a population of child mothers and fathers. The limited or no knowledge on health education especially on community hygiene, sanitation and Sexual and Reproductive Health are among the causes to such poor health state according to the research report findings.
To address such problems, NEMACY-Uganda started to conduct refresher trainings of Village Health Teams (VHTs) as a tool to equip them with updated knowledge and skills on how to help communities to improve on the hygiene and sanitation as well reduce the high levels of teenage pregnancy in the areas of Jinja District
In such trainings the VHTs are reminded to make home visits, close supervision and more campaigns about the dangers of poor hygiene and sanitation at all levels by mobilizing and organizing community meetings to sensitize them on Hygiene and Sanitation, family planning use, sensitize parents not to spy aware of talking to their children about sexual reproductive health education and inform the children on dangers of teenage pregnancy among others.
Therefore empowering the VHTs with the updated knowledge and skills is an effective strategy in solving health related issues in communities.
